The e-fence feature automatically stops excavator motion using boundaries you set in the monitor for the entire working envelope—above, below, front and sides. The big efficiency booster on these next generation models is a breakthrough technology called Cat Grade with Assist. It’s an easy-to-use 2D system that automates key boom and bucket functions. How you might ask? Overall, Cat Grade with 2D is a simple bucket guidance system that helps you navigate precise depth, slope and horizontal distance to grade – helping you reach desired grade quickly and accurately. The operator just enters desired depth and slope on the monitor, presses a button and lets technology do the rest—quickly, accurately and with far less effort. Customers report it’s nearly twice as fast as traditional grading methods and studies confirm it burns up to 25 percent less fuel (more on this next).
Want more efficiency? Using the system’s E-fence feature enables the machine to work safely under structures or near traffic by preventing any part of the excavator from moving outside operator-defined set points. Additionally, Cat Payload tracks and delivers load weight to the cab in real time so the operator can meet loading targets faster and more precisely. Next generation Cat? Excavators deliver the power you need to work profitably, but burn up to 25 PERCENT less fuel than their predecessors. Here’s how.
Cat engineers attacked the fuel challenge from every angle, adjusting variables until the best solution emerged… a precise combination of engine speed and hydraulic pump size, delivered in a machine that works hard and saves fuel through the following features:
- Electronic controls automatically cut engine speed when there’s no demand from the hydraulic system, so you don’t waste fuel.
- Power settings—including a new Smart Mode—match hydraulic demand to engine speed for maximum fuel efficiency.
- The cooling system uses multiple fans that independently control hydraulic oil, radiator and aftercooler temps. It’s more efficient than a single-fan system that has to cool based on the hottest component.
- A new main control valve eliminates pilot lines. Fewer lines = less power loss = better fuel efficiency. Plus there’s less hydraulic oil to buy, use and dispose of safely.
- Positive flow control sends power and pressure exactly where and when it’s needed, cutting cycle time and saving fuel.
- Boom regeneration and flow control are managed automatically to enable quick, precise loading with less fuel.

All daily maintenance checks for engine oil, fuel water separator, fuel tank water and sediment, and cooling system level are performed from ground level, making the routine faster, easier and safer. Offering extended and more synchronized maintenance intervals, next generation Cat excavators do more work at a lower cost and reduce maintenance costs through the following features. The new Cat hydraulic return filter that boasts a 3,000-hour service life. A new Cat air filter with integrated pre-cleaner and primary and secondary filters that extend service life to 1,000 hours. A new fuel tank cap filter that extends service life to 2,000 hours while each of the three fuel system filters offer a 500-hour service interval.?
